Course Description:
This comprehensive Continuing Education (CE) course is designed for educators, administrators, counselors, and support staff dedicated to enhancing their cultural awareness and sensitivity when working with college students. The course aims to provide effective practices for supporting a diverse student population, addressing their unique challenges, and fostering an inclusive and supportive college environment.
Biography of presenter:
Dr. Michelle Jackson, Ph.D. brings over 20 years of extensive experience in higher education to her role. Throughout her career, she has held pivotal positions including admissions, academic advising, and leadership roles such as campus director and assistant vice president of student affairs, with a strong focus on the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Student Conduct International Student Services, Student Assistant Program and Office of Accessibility.
In each capacity, Dr. Jackson has been dedicated to empowering individuals to achieve their academic and personal goals. She has played a crucial role in guiding leadership teams to understand and implement inclusive initiatives, creating a supportive learning environment where every student can thrive and feel a sense of belonging.
Dr. Jackson is deeply involved in community service, collaborating with K-12 administrators, students and volunteering her expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as restorative justice practices.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Jackson cherishes quality time with her spouse and three beloved dogs. This balance enriches her perspective and fuels her dedication to making positive impacts both professionally and personally.
With her robust background in leadership and a profound understanding of diversity and equity issues in higher education, Dr. Jackson is committed to utilizing her expertise to drive positive change and foster success for all individuals she serves.

Part 1
Working with College Students
In the initial segment of our course, we will delve into the diverse backgrounds and unique needs of college students. Participants will gain insights into the demographic shifts and varying cultural contexts that shape the student experience. With these elements, educators and support staff can better tailor their approaches to meet the individual needs of their students, fostering a supportive and inclusive educational environment.

Embracing and Understanding Cultural Diversity in a College Setting
The second part of our course shifts focus to embracing and recognizing cultural diversity within a college setting. Participants will explore the complex dimensions of cultural diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and more. This section aims to enhance participants' cultural competence, enabling them to support and advocate for a diverse student population effectively.

Part 3
International Students and Students with Accessibility Needs
In the third segment of our course, we will focus on the unique challenges and requirements faced by international students. This 30-minute section will delve into the overlap with issues common to all college students, such as mental health, homesickness, and financial insecurity, while also highlighting the additional complexities international students encounter. The final topic of Part 3 focuses on supporting students with accessibility needs. This 30-minute segment will cover the legal and practical aspects of providing accommodations and resources in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
